LIARS & TIGERS & BULL***T, OH MY: THE TROUBLE WITH SYRIA IS….

AMpanicbutton

“……there’s always a belief, a want, a need to believe that when there’s a problem in the world, there is an ‘America’ button we can press to solve it”.  – Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) Disclosure: this will meander. Let me preface with a little “I’m a progressive” and a lot of “I support the President” with a dash of “most of the time” sprinkled with some “no, I don’t think it’s okay to have innocents gassed by a madman” and just a hint of “……however” – or something like that. I was one of those insane Obama groupies in 2008…

Battle Scars: War Expressed Through Art

mask 6

As new generation of soldiers return from our many wars, and are confronted with the internal conflicts brought on by the trauma of war; the military together with mental health professionals and artists are trying to find ways to give “wounded warriors” creative tools for processing and expressing trauma. In an effort to aid soldiers suffering from Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) and the psychological effects of war such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Department of Defense has been utilizing art therapy. The treatment center is the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICOE), located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical…

British Millionaire Who Sold Iraq Fake Bomb Detectors Found Guilty

£££Fee-for-use-James-McCormick-1850037

British businessman, James McCormick, who sold golf ball finders as bomb detectors to countries at war where thousands of people were dying and injured by explosives, has been found guilty of fraud in a British court on April 24. McCormick, 57, reportedly made an estimated 50 million pounds ($76 million) from the sales of golf ball finders worth $20 for up to $40,000 each. Experts said the devices lacked “any grounding in science” and were “completely ineffectual as a piece of detection equipment.” A former policeman and salesman, McCormick, sold the devices to military and police forces around the world,…

Myanmar Muslims Brace for Possible Genocide

rohingya1

Human rights advocates throughout the globe are working overtime today to draw attention to the increasingly dire state of affairs in Myanmar. In recent decades, the centuries old ethnic tensions between the majority Buddhist population and the minority Muslim population (known as the “Rohingya,”) have led to increasingly bloody clashes between the two communities. This month alone over thirty people have died in waves of violence carried out against the Rohingya villages and neighborhoods by Buddhist mobs. Some reports claim that many of the mobs were led by area monks, who have allegedly been publishing anti-Muslim propaganda and inciting acts…

The Language War

warofwords

How an issue is framed in large part determines our attitudes toward it.  That seems obvious.  But the critical importance of controlling the message by controlling the language is not so obvious.  Profound changes to America have occurred, or been attempted, with small changes in the language. The Right has been successful in getting their words and phrases into everyday usage in large part because they are fighting the language wars, and they seem to be winning it. Global Warming becomes “climate change”, the Affordable Healthcare Act becomes Obamacare, common-sense gun laws become an attack on the 2nd amendment, government…
