On December 8th, 2012, he was replaced by Brigadier General Salim Idris as the commander of the Free Syrian Army. According to the article in BBC Turkce Haberler, Kanafani lived in Canada with her husband and 2 kids. She studied engineering and worked in the oil industry. BBC reporter Richard Galpin met with her in Adana for this interview. Kanafani…

Who are ISIS? What do They Want? Who is Behind Them?

On June 11th, the world woke up to the news of ISIS (The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant* -alternatively translated as Islamic State in Iraq and Syria-) taking over major cities in Iraq and advancing towards Baghdad. This was not, of course, news to the people who have been following the situation in the region since the invasion of Iraq, but for many, ISIS is the new genie in the bottle. Especially puzzling, how was this relatively small extremist group of people able to seize the second most populous city of Iraq, along with other cities and towns…

Bombshell Claim by Hersh: Erdogan and Turkish Government Carried Out the Chemical Attack in Syria (Video)

Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh opens a can of worms for already embattled Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In his last report, published by the London Review of Books magazine, titled The Red Line and the Rat Line, Hersh claims that the chemical attack on Syrian civilians, planned and executed by Erdogan’s people, was a covert action to push Obama over the red line. Below are a few of the paragraphs extracted from the report. To learn more about Erdogan’s ascent to Turkish Prime Ministry, with the full support of the USA, and to read the entire article click…

Iran Warned the USA on Chemical Weapons, TCSM Claims

In a letter obtained by The Christian Science Monitor (TCSM) that was sent to the USA officials, Iran has been warning Washington since July 2012 that Sunni rebel fighters have acquired chemical weapons, and called on the US to send “an immediate and serious warning” to rebel groups not to use them. Iran claims that it warned the United States directly, in mid- and late- 2012, and at least once after that, about the risks of chemical weapons among the rebels. The letter references messages from July 18 and December 1, 2012. Tehran Times also reports on the letter, claiming…

LIARS & TIGERS & BULL***T, OH MY: THE TROUBLE WITH SYRIA IS….

“……there’s always a belief, a want, a need to believe that when there’s a problem in the world, there is an ‘America’ button we can press to solve it”.  – Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) Disclosure: this will meander. Let me preface with a little “I’m a progressive” and a lot of “I support the President” with a dash of “most of the time” sprinkled with some “no, I don’t think it’s okay to have innocents gassed by a madman” and just a hint of “……however” – or something like that. I was one of those insane Obama groupies in 2008…

CIA has been Training the Syrian Rebels, Report Claims

Los Angeles Times reports that CIA operatives and U.S. special operations troops have been secretly training Syrian rebels with anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons in Turkey and Jordan since late last year. White House officials refused to comment on the report, saying only that the U.S. had increased its assistance to the rebellion. According to the report, the covert U.S. training at bases in Jordan and Turkey began months before President Obama approved plans to begin directly arming the opposition to Syrian President Bashar Assad. Progressive Press has revealed this information in May, after the local newspapers in Turkey claimed the…

Egypt Cuts All Ties With Syria

Speaking at a conference on the Syrian uprising in Cairo on Saturday, President Mohamed Morsi announced that Egypt will be cutting all ties with Syria. He ordered the Syrian embassies in Damascus and Cairo to be closed, and called for imposition of no-fly zone. Morsi also said Egypt will begin providing Syrian opposition forces with financial aid and support for the Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah would end. This is a policy shift for Morsi which backed the organization against Israel in the Second Lebanon War seven years ago. Morsi said “We supported Hezbollah during Lebanon war and today we stand…

Syria: U.S. Media Drops The Ball As They Did Just Before Iraq War

The know-it-all U.S. mainstream media are pushing a black and white narrative of an extremely complex conflict in the Middle East, again. Just as they did prior to the Iraq War, they are following the White House’s story of a “big, bad dictator, killing his own people with chemical weapons”. The reasons for this shortfall of honest reporting vary from incompetence to laziness, but there could also be a more sinister agenda: helping the U.S. government to propagate its plan to either invade or intervene in Syria. After all, Americans will always be more sympathetic to victims who are suffering…

U.S. Sends Millions of Dollars Aid to Syria While Cutting Meals for Poor American Children

The Obama administration is providing $100 million in new Syria aid, U.S. officials said Wednesday, bringing the total U.S. aid to $510 million since the civil war began in that country more than two years ago. I am all for foreign aid, and feel terrible for the innocent displaced people, not only in Syria but all over the world. (Yes, there are others around the world dealing with similar civil wars and displacement, but of course our focus is on the Middle East. I will let you conclude on the reasons.) Common sense begs the question: If we are unable…

War With Syria Signifies A War With Iran: Resolution 65

On April 17th, while the entire U.S. media was focused on the chase for Dzokhar Tsarnaev, the 2nd terrorist suspect in the Boston Marathon attacks, the Senate introduced Resolution 65, affirming that the U.S. will fully back Israel in the instance of war with Iran. The Resolution goes beyond affirming U.S. commitment in preventing a nuclear Iran. It ensures that the United States will ‘authorize the use of military force, diplomatic, military, and economic support to Israel in its defense of its territory, people, and existence.’ Meaning, the U.S. will go to war with Iran if Israel does. This resolution…

Israel Strikes Syrian Armed-Forces Sites (Video)

On Friday and Sunday, Israel carried out the second and third strikes on Syria this year, significantly increasing the country’s involvement with the civil war and bloodshed in Syria, the BBC reported Sunday. Israel has claimed responsibility for an earlier strike on Syria in January, and says that the target of the strikes were weapons headed to the hands of Hezbollah in Lebanon. All of the strikes have caused casualties and widespread damage. The New York Times reported that one of the targets was a shipment of Iranian-made Fateh-110s missiles. Iran and Hezbollah have both backed President Bashar al-Assad in the…

Was Syrian “Regime Change” Planned in 1957? (Video)

As I have been hearing the war drums beating louder and louder for the invasion of Syria, albeit the President’s resistance, I remembered a Guardian article, I have read years ago. According to the article, published in the Guardian newspaper on September 27, 2003, America’s CIA and Britain’s MI6 security forces made plans to overthrow the Syrian government in 1957 and assassinate three of its key leaders, because the country was increasingly orientating towards Moscow and threatening the West’s oil supplies. Matthew Jones, a specialist in international history at Royal Holloway, University of London, discovered the plans in the private…

PKK Sets the Date for Withdrawal from Turkey

According to today’s report on Hurriyet Daily News, The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has announced its withdrawal from Turkey, starting May 8th. The PKK separatists have been fighting the Turkish government for the last three decades, demanding an independent Kurdish state, which resulted in more than 40,000 people’s death. Announcement came after the jailed leader of the organization, Abdullah Ocalan, declared on March 21st that the PKK would withdraw its militants from the Turkish soil On March 21, after more than four decades of waging war there. The US, European Union and Turkey designate the group as a terrorist organization…

FBI Arrests 18-year-old US Citizen Headed for Syria to Join Jabhat al Nusra

According to the report in The New Zealand Herald, a U.S. citizen has been arrested by the FBI at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Saturday after months of surveillance by the agency, allegedly planning to engage in terrorism in Syria. A statement issued by the FBI said there was no connection between this arrest and the recent Boston Marathon bombings. Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, 18, was being monitored by the agency since his friend was arrested in September after a botched attempt to detonate a bomb outside a Chicago bar. The suspect had planned to link up with the Jabhat…

Toothless International Arms Trade Treaty

On April 2nd 2013, The United Nations General Assembly approved the first global arms trade treaty with 154 votes in favor, 3 against and 23 abstentions. The overwhelming approval comes one week after Iran, Syria and North Korea prevented a treaty-drafting conference at U.N. headquarters from reaching the required consensus to adopt the treaty. These same countries were the sole votes against the treaty last Tuesday. The text of this treaty carries the purpose of regulating the international trade in conventional arms. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon praised the treaty as a powerful new tool in preventing grave human rights abuses and…

Do Some U.S. Senators Support Genocide?

A first ever comprehensive international Arms Trade Treaty was approved by UN on April 3rd, 2013. The treaty seeks to regulate the $70 billion (46.2 billion pounds) business in conventional arms and keep weapons out of the hands of human rights abusers. If the treaty is signed by President Obama, government agencies would review it before the administration decides whether to seek ratification by the Senate. The Arms Trade Treaty is intended to prevent brutal dictators from acquiring conventional weapons including tanks, missiles, warships, artillery, and combat aircraft which they can use on their own people to commit genocide. Passage…

What Does the Future Hold for Syria?

The civil war in Syria continues to drag on tragically, nearing its third year. With thousands of lives lost and at least one million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries, Syria is no longer a viable country. There are common electricity outages, food shortages, half of the buildings destroyed, including many hospitals, massive dislocation of its population-internally and externally, and a civilian death toll of over 70,000, which continues to increase. One of the hardest hit cities has been Aleppo, the largest in Syria. Being a major battleground for both sides since the outset of the war, it continues to struggle…
