Egypt Cuts All Ties With Syria
Speaking at a conference on the Syrian uprising in Cairo on Saturday, President Mohamed Morsi announced that Egypt will be cutting all ties with Syria. He ordered the Syrian embassies in Damascus and Cairo to be closed, and called for imposition of no-fly zone. Morsi also said Egypt will begin providing Syrian opposition forces with financial aid and support for the Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah would end. Jabhat Al-Nusra, a Sunni Muslim extremist rebel group trying to topple the regime of Bashar Al-Assad in Syria, declared that they are ready to fight Assad supporter Hezbollah. As the Syria’s brutal two-year war drags on and it has grown more sectarian and more likely to spill over into neighboring countries. Lebanon and Iran could be pitting Hezbollah militants against Al Qaeda-linked jihadists who have flocked to Syria from across the Muslim world. Shi’a Islamic militant group Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah has said this week “If there ever comes a day when our responsibility demands that we fight in Syria, we will not conceal that.” Hezbollah was formed by Muslim clerics and funded by Iran following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, which helped drove Israel’s soldiers out of Lebanon.
