Progressive Patriotism
A friend of mine was upset the other day, because her best friend accused her of being unpatriotic in the political commentary she posts on Facebook. My friend often writes about problems in America like the growing poverty rate, corporate greed, gun violence, poor access to health care and political corruption. She was told, in essence, that America is the greatest country on Earth with more freedom than any other country and that anyone who complains about America is not a loyal, patriotic American. I have a very different perspective. I think the suggestion that it’s somehow unpatriotic to discuss…
Greed is a Disease
Written by Guest Author PC There is a great deal of truth in the below meme’s powerful statement. Countries like China, Mexico, Bangladesh and others do not have Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) — to protect their people from politicians like Michelle Bachmann, Gov. Rick Perry and industry captains the likes of the Koch Brothers and their ilk. If you are a conservative who pushes the right-wing agenda and talking points, but…
Let’s Stop the Redistribution of Wealth!
Conservative, libertarian and neoliberal arguments often accuse progressives of trying to “redistribute wealth” by taxing the rich and giving the money to the poor. Let’s be honest, over the past few decades, there has indeed been a redistribution of wealth in USA, based in part on changing tax rates. The un-Real America
There’s a place in the middle of the desert where everything stops. All movement ceases. The rocks, beaten into submission by centuries of harsh desert winds, look on wearily as though part of a silent jury. The temperature climaxes around 110 degrees Fahrenheit, distorting the surrounding air and giving the whole scene an otherworldly feel. The place is a stretch of road in Arizona lying between Tucson and Phoenix. Cars inch along endlessly; the line trailing for miles. For most of the time, the reason for the slowdown remains a mystery. Only until the cars climb the last ridge do…
