The reaction to the Greek government’s decision to shut down public broadcaster Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) on Tuesday, is continuing. Today, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has called on the Greek government to reopen the channel. The Greek government said the closure was necessary to meet the country’s debt bailout obligations. It is the latest move in austerity measures aimed at leading the country out of recession. In Germany’s financial capital Frankfurt, over 7,000 Blockupy movement protestors marched on Saturday during a second day of protests against Europe’s austerity policies. Trying to restore public trust after the resignation of Budget Minister Jérome Cahuzac, amid allegations of tax fraud, French President Francois Hollande announced today that he will work to eradicate “tax havens “ in Europe and the world, and he would step up the fight against corruption. A third Bulgarian man died today from self-immolation injuries. He set himself on fire on February 26, as a protest against the rising poverty, unemployment and corruption in the EU’s poorest country. 53-year-old unemployed father of five, Ventsislav Vasilev, had doused himself with fuel and set himself ablaze outside the mayor’s office in the central town of Radnevo. After decades of secrecy, the tax-haven country is considering a public database that will make the names of thousands of previously hidden companies and their directors, public.
