Strong Signal to Iran: Arms Deal with Middle East

w.hagel-42113

Only two days after the Pentagon mentioned that it was finalizing a $10 billion arms deal with Israel and two of Iran’s main rivals – the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia-, in order to strengthen their military, Chuck Hagel arrived in Israel on Sunday on his first visit there as a U.S. Defense Secretary. Asked if the arms deal sent a message that the military option was on the table if Tehran moved to build a nuclear weapon, Hagel said: “I don’t think there’s any question that’s another very clear signal to Iran.” He added, “The bottom line is…

N. Korean Rhetoric Provokes Missile Shield Deployment

SKOREA-NUCLEAR-SUMMIT-US

Guam will soon be host to a U.S. missile defense system, as sabre rattling and war time rhetoric continue to spill from Pyongyang. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD, will be deployed to the U.S. protectorate of Guam in the coming weeks, in an effort by the U.S. to buffer itself against any potential North Korean missile threats. Statements, made in a press release by the Pentagon today regarding the move, reflected Washington’s growing concern with the increasingly heated threats and actions made by North Korea in recent weeks. “The United States continues to urge the North…

Say Anything

There is a very disturbing trend occurring in our daily consumption of news and information. First, news is not really news. News used to be, oh, I don’t know, what’s happening on a given day in the war we’re fighting (which is rarely, if ever, covered anymore), or a report on a landmark Supreme Court decision, for instance. Now, it’s all BREAKING NEWS, which CNN’s never ending crawlus interruptus tells us is everything from Lindsay Lohan missing community service to President Obama’s golfing buddy to North Korea conducting nuclear testing. No, really. That’s the gamut. But there’s something else happening in…

TGFJL: McCain & Graham Bitter It Up Alone

“Thank God for Joe Lieberman”. Probably not a statement made by Al Gore. It was, however, directed (sharply) at former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE), during his Senate confirmation hearing before the Armed Services Committee on Thursday, January 31. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), former Presidential nominee, former Maverick, forever the man who thought Sarah Palin was an acceptable choice to lead this country (and, judging by the many very large bulging veins McCain has been sporting lately, Palin could very well have been called upon). McCain castigated Chuck Hagel for his position on the Iraq War surge. He had to know,…
