Who are ISIS? What do They Want? Who is Behind Them?

On June 11th, the world woke up to the news of ISIS (The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant* -alternatively translated as Islamic State in Iraq and Syria-) taking over major cities in Iraq and advancing towards Baghdad. This was not, of course, news to the people who have been following the situation in the region since the invasion of Iraq, but for many, ISIS is the new genie in the bottle. Especially puzzling, how was this relatively small extremist group of people able to seize the second most populous city of Iraq, along with other cities and towns…

LIARS & TIGERS & BULL***T, OH MY: THE TROUBLE WITH SYRIA IS….

“……there’s always a belief, a want, a need to believe that when there’s a problem in the world, there is an ‘America’ button we can press to solve it”.  – Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) Disclosure: this will meander. Let me preface with a little “I’m a progressive” and a lot of “I support the President” with a dash of “most of the time” sprinkled with some “no, I don’t think it’s okay to have innocents gassed by a madman” and just a hint of “……however” – or something like that. I was one of those insane Obama groupies in 2008…

Al-Qaeda to Announce an Islamic State in Syria, FSA Claims

Al-Qaeda is about to announce an Islamic State in northern Syria, says a senior figure in the Free Syrian Army (FSA), according to a report in Asharq Al-Awsat. Asking to remain anonymous, the source said the time for the announcement was confirmed to be the first day of Eid, at the end of Ramadan which is August 7, 2013. The report continues that the source claimed implementation of this plan started with the killing of FSA commander Kamal Hamami, Fadi El-Qash and his brother last week, as reported by Progressive Press. More assassinations of the FSA officers and key figures…

Al-Qaeda Kills Free Syrian Army Commander (Video)

Free Syrian Army (FSA) commander Kamal Hamami, also known as Abu Basir al-Ladkani, was shot dead following a meeting with the Al-Qaeda militants in the Syrian port city of Latakia on July 11th. Also a Supreme Military Council member, Hamami was meeting with members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) , FSA spokesman Qassem Saadeddine informed Reuters. Spokesman added that ISIL, an Al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, has threatened to kill all of the group’s senior commanders. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group is the umbrella organization for a long list of insurgency…

Syrian Opposition Forces are Terrorists, Barzani Says

According to a new report on Alsumaria TV, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki  and Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s president Massoud Barzani both confirmed that the weapons given to Syrian opposition groups end up in Al Qaida’s hands and are being used in Al Qaeda’s activities inside Iraq. Speaking at a press conference held on July 7, together with Iraq’s Kurdistan Region’s president Massoud Barzani, Al Maliki added, “We looked into the Syrian crisis which is the cause of the Syrian people and not that of other countries. The weapons certain countries are providing to the radical Syrian opposition; especially that…

Syrian Rebels Behead Christians for Helping the Military

A priest and another Christian were beheaded before a cheering crowd by Syrian rebels for aiding the President Bashar Assad’s military, The Washington Times reports. Syrian Christians caught in the middle of a brutal struggle in Syria and face an existential threat. Also yesterday, Islamist rebels in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo issued an order banning women from dressing in what it considered provocative styles and wearing make up. As continuously reported by the Progressive Press, hard-line jihadist groups have increasingly taken the lead in the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad’s rule. Many units are linked to Al Qaeda have…

US Congressmen Introduce Bill to Stop Arming Syrian Opposition

According to a report on Anadolu Agency, today, a group of bipartisan US congressmen introduced a bill to prevent US President Obama from arming Syrian opposition. The bill was introduced by Republicans Chris Gibson and Michelle Bachmann and Democrats Peter Welch and Rick Nolan from the U.S. House of Representatives, and Democrats Tom Udall and Chris Murphy and Republicans Rand Paul and Mike Lee from the Senate. Democrat Welch said it was vitally important that they recognized the lessons learned from Iraq and Afghanistan. Welch added: “Syria is in a brutal and tragic civil war the roots of which go…

Al-Nusra Say They are Ready to Fight Hezbullah in Syria

Jabhat Al-Nusra, a Sunni Muslim extremist rebel group trying to topple the regime of Bashar Al-Assad in Syria, declared that they are ready to fight Assad supporter Hezbollah. As the Syria’s brutal two-year war drags on and it has grown more sectarian and more likely to spill over into neighboring countries. Lebanon and Iran could be pitting Hezbollah militants against Al Qaeda-linked jihadists who have flocked to Syria from across the Muslim world. Al-Nusra, recently swore allegiance to Al Qaeda, is part of the many factions of Syrian opposition. As reported by Progressive Press on May 13, the opposition is…

Syria: U.S. Media Drops The Ball As They Did Just Before Iraq War

The know-it-all U.S. mainstream media are pushing a black and white narrative of an extremely complex conflict in the Middle East, again. Just as they did prior to the Iraq War, they are following the White House’s story of a “big, bad dictator, killing his own people with chemical weapons”. The reasons for this shortfall of honest reporting vary from incompetence to laziness, but there could also be a more sinister agenda: helping the U.S. government to propagate its plan to either invade or intervene in Syria. After all, Americans will always be more sympathetic to victims who are suffering…

Is Hezbollah Supporting Syrian Regime?

Shi’a Islamic militant group Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah has said this week “If there ever comes a day when our responsibility demands that we fight in Syria, we will not conceal that.” Hezbollah was formed by Muslim clerics and funded by Iran following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, which helped drove Israel’s soldiers out of Lebanon. It is an armed group as well as a political party that was established primarily to offer resistance to the Israeli occupation. Since then it has been receiving funds and support from Iran and Syria, hence its willingness to help Assad’s brutal…
