Syrian Rebels Behead Christians for Helping the Military

A priest and another Christian were beheaded before a cheering crowd by Syrian rebels for aiding the President Bashar Assad’s military, The Washington Times reports.

Syrian Christians caught in the middle of a brutal struggle in Syria and face an existential threat.

Also yesterday, Islamist rebels in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo issued an order banning women from dressing in what it considered provocative styles and wearing make up.

As continuously reported by the Progressive Press, hard-line jihadist groups have increasingly taken the lead in the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad’s rule. Many units are linked to Al Qaeda have stretched their influence beyond the battleground and established police and administrative councils in some rebel-held areas.

In May, footage of Syrian rebel commander Abu Sakkar cutting the heart out of a soldier and biting into it has emerged online, generating outrage and shock around the world.

CNS News reports that the Western church leaders concerned about Syrian Christians are among those who have urged the U.S. and European governments not to add more arms to the conflict.

The report adds, during a hearing on Capitol Hill last week members of two House Foreign Affairs subcommittees heard testimony about the dangers facing Syrian Christians, including those posed by extremists among the rebels.

Toronto based international human rights organization One Free World representative, Majed El Shafie, said in a written testimony:

“Islamist factions, which include Muslim Brotherhood, Salafist, and Al-Qaeda-linked groups are rapidly overtaking the undisciplined and poorly organized rebels as they have in other countries, operate on the assumption that minorities, particularly Alawites and Christians, support the regime.”

Foreign militants supported by the West, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have increased attacks on civilians in recent weeks. Last month, an entire Christian village in Homs was burned to the ground, and two Christian bishops kidnapped in Aleppo at the beginning of the year are still missing.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that America has started sending arms to rebel fighters. The Central Intelligence Agency just began transporting weapons to Jordan for eventual transfer to Syrian fighters.

On June 28th, a group of bipartisan US congressmen introduced a bill to prevent US President Obama from arming Syrian opposition.

The Progressive Press also revealed that CIA operatives and U.S. special operations troops have been secretly training Syrian rebels with anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons in Turkey and Jordan since late last year.
