Sen. McCain on “Dismemberment of a Sovereign Nation”
US Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has recently turned down an advisory position to Ukraine’s President Poroshenko, due to the US constitution’s prohibition of such a thing. In a written statement posted on his senate webpage, the senator wrote, “I am deeply proud to be a friend to Ukraine in their fight against Vladimir Putin’s dismemberment of a sovereign nation.”
After reading this statement, one feels the urge to remind the Senator that Iraq, Libya and Syria were also ‘sovereign’ nations, once. Syria is still trying to stay sovereign. I wonder if the good senator would like to give us a statement on the ‘dismemberment’ of these countries, especially considering his direct involvement in it, openly supporting Syria’s anti-government fighters for example.
On Wednesday, Ukraine’s President Poroshenko published an announcement on his presidential website stating that the US Senator John McCain was appointed to a part-time position in his government as an advisor to him in the International Advisory Board, which would be headed by former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. The board will also include Elmar Brok, a member of the European Parliament, and Anders Aslund, a neoliberal economist described as a banking industry-funded travelling economic policy consultant, and former director of the Russian and Eurasian Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
The senator admitted that he was asked to do the job, adding, “I was asked to do it both by Ukraine and Saakashvili and I said I would be inclined to do it, but I said I needed to look at all the nuances of it, whether it’s legal under our ethics and all that kind of stuff.”
Senator McCain, who chairs the US Senate Armed Services Committee, has called on President Obama to get more involved in Ukraine and deliver weapons to the country, as Kiev government forces are continuing to carry out military operations against the self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk in the country’s east.
