During the Turkish delegation’s official visit to U.S.A. on May 14, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arınc made a visit to the Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen who lives in Pennsylvania since the late 1990s. Currently, there are 32 Turkish-American associations in U.S.A. which are established as secular and not religiously affiliated. According to a statement given by the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) Communications Director Hakan Dakın, no one from the delegation made a visit to any of these associations during their last visit to the U.S.A. Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News reports that Arınc, although he said…

Colombia Makes Peace with FARC after 49 Years of Armed Conflict

On Sunday, just a few days before the rebel group FARC’s 49th anniversary, the Colombian government and the FARC peace negotiators jointly announced an agreement for “radical transformations” in the Colombian countryside, a major breakthrough in peace talks that could end the half a century of conflict. The peace talks between the parties have been taking place in Havana, Cuba for the past six months. The FARC has long asserted that the land redistribution issues were the main reason they rose up against the government in the mid-1960s, claiming to fight on behalf of the country’s peasants. According to the…

Your Tax Cash Stolen For Corporate Gain

burning-wasting-money

When you pay taxes, you are essentially sending your hard-earned cash to the U.S. government to support and maintain the United States. Your money is supposed to help support your country, for the betterment of all Americans. But today, politicians commonly relay a message to the American people – we can’t afford anything for you. Yet politicians eagerly permit tax subsidies, no-bid contracts, grants, and more, to banks and corporations without hesitation. It’s no secret that the USA is experiencing serious financial debt, which amounts to trillions of dollars. This debt is growing tremendously with each passing day. Politicians preach…

Minding Our P’s and T’s This Memorial Day

MemorialDay2012

In between family, friends, burgers, beers and innings this weekend, we would all do well to take a moment, long or short, verbal or silent, to deeply thank those we honor on Memorial Day. Enhanced thoughts and prayers for our brothers and sisters still serving abroad in our lingering conflicts wouldn’t hurt either. Memorial Day first came into congealed being as Decoration Day in May of 1868 on the order of Civil War Gen. John Logan to sanction a time for observance already informally practiced at various times in the North and South alike. By the end of WWI, the…

Iranian Cleric: Women can’t Be President in Iran

Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi insists that women cannot be presidential candidates. (Photo courtesy: PressTV)

Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, a member of Iran’s constitutional watchdog group, says women can not be presidential candidates in Iran’s presidential election, scheduled for June 14. The Election Monitoring Agency (EMA) which is managed by the Guardian Council, controls the credentials of the registered candidates. The Guardian Council where Yazdi is a member, appears to follow interpretations of the constitution that suggest only a man may hold Iran’s highest elected office. About 30 women candidates were seeking to run in the upcoming election, largely as a symbolic gesture. The group claims Iran’s constitution uses a word denoting only a male president….

Battle Scars: War Expressed Through Art

mask 6

As new generation of soldiers return from our many wars, and are confronted with the internal conflicts brought on by the trauma of war; the military together with mental health professionals and artists are trying to find ways to give “wounded warriors” creative tools for processing and expressing trauma. In an effort to aid soldiers suffering from Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) and the psychological effects of war such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Department of Defense has been utilizing art therapy. The treatment center is the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICOE), located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical…

When Does Obstruction Become Treason?

politics

Why Won’t Americans Just Read the Constitution? Recently, Bill Maher and Michael Moore rightly criticized Congressional Republicans for their relentless obstruction of government.  Plenty of liberal bloggers and their followers jumped on the bandwagon.  But they all went too far in calling it treason. Republicans have tripped over each other to obstruct every budget proposal, jobs bill, issue, policy, effort, nomination, and idea that President Obama has proposed since the day of his first inauguration. In 2010, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said, at a Heritage Foundation event, that denying President Obama a second term was the GOP’S top…

Is Monsanto Really Wicked or Misunderstood?

Over two million protesters rallied in 300 cities in 44 countries around the world on Saturday, as part of a global protest against the seed giant Monsanto and the genetically modified food it produces. The debate over genetically engineered food has been going on since the FDA concluded that there was no difference between genetically engineered and non-engineered plants in 1992. Genetic engineering advocates claim that the GMOs could reduce World hunger and increase nutritional quality in foods. Unfortunately, most of these claims have been debunked repeatedly, as Anna Lappe explains in her 2011 article on Civil Eats. The March…

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was in Addis…

Congress: Enriching the Rich and Empowering the Powerful

endoftheamericandreamcom-image-43.si

It’s not your imagination. Everything really is increasingly being skewed to benefit the very wealthy at the expense of everyone else. When you look at the principles that many politicians advocate in U.S.A., it becomes explicitly clear that there is an entire system dedicated to giving more wealth and more power to the very tiny fraction of our population who already possess the vast majority of the wealth and power in our country. Here are ten examples of the political ideology advocated by many politicians in our country. Pay close attention and see who really benefits from each of these…

The devastation in Moore, Oklahoma is unimaginable. A deadly F-5 tornado hit this town on May 20th, 2013 and the death toll continues to rise as time passes by. Plaza Towers Elementary school was directly in the path of this horrific storm. Even though Moore, OK, resides in the middle of tornado alley, Oklahoma politicians denied the children of this school, a tornado shelter. These children were denied the freedom to be properly sheltered from Mother Nature’s wrath. Instead, these kids were forced to depend only on the walls of the school to protect them from an F5 tornado. The…

Impeachment: Myths, Facts, and History

obama

More Empty Impeachment Threats from the GOP Right-wingers trembled with glee when Sen. James Inhofe said that President Obama might be impeached for the events in Benghazi.  Few rank-and-file Americans understand impeachment or the odds of it happening.  It does not mean that the president is fired. Most members of Congress and the media understand what impeachment means, but our schools work very hard to produce politically ignorant citizens.  Impeachment means charging a public official with an offense.  Impeachment does not mean firing a public official from her/his job. Constitution and Procedures The U.S. Constitution states that: The House of…

Conservative Think Tank Urges GOP to Stay Focused on Obama “Scandals”

Scandal-Promo

The political strategy of artificially perpetrating crises to distract a nations’ people from the real problems, has been employed by many political parties in virtually every country. In the U.S.A, although used by both parties time to time, the Republican Party appears to be the expert of this fake crisis creation technique. They became so outraged by a Marine holding the U.S. President’s umbrella at an outdoor speech that it is difficult to take them seriously when their outrage is directed towards something really worthy of outrage. I am not a political historian, so I won’t begin to guess when…

Women’s Rights Law Blocked by Mullahs in Afghanistan

Fawzia Koofi, MP for Badakhshan afghanistan

The Afghan Law on Elimination of Violence Against Women has been blocked by religious lawmakers in Afghanistan, claiming it violated Islamic principles. The law has been in effect since 2009 as a Presidential decree and it was being brought before the parliament, because the lawmaker and women’s rights activist Fawzia Kofi wanted a parliamentary vote to prevent its potential reversal. Unfortunately, it was entirely withdrawn by the conservative opposition. The law criminalizes domestic violence against women, child marriage and forced marriages. It also bans the traditional practice of selling and buying women to settle disputes. It specifies that rape victims…
