An Open Letter to all People who Hate the President

(Note: The views expressed in this editorial and the video below are those of the individual and not necessarily those of The Progressive Press, its editorial staff or its affiliates.)
It’s fine to be a conservative who disagrees with Obama politically. He is a fallible human being. Like any politician, he deserves criticism now and then. Progressives criticize him all the time because his policies are more conservative than many thought he would be.
If you would say “Obama is wrong on this issue and here’s why”, I could respect that. But it’s something else to be a hard-core Glenn Beck parroting, Bush-was-God, Obama-is-Satan, damn-the-facts, anyone-who-disagrees-with-me-is-a-communist, conservative.
Sometimes it’s hard to comprehend the level of hatred you have for President Obama. This hatred is not about dissent and it began long before he even took office and doesn’t seem to stem from anything he’s done as president.
From the day he was inaugurated, all over the country you began protesting Obama’s tax increases even though he had only lowered your taxes. Although he’s offered more proof of his origin of birth than any president in history, nearly half of you still believe Obama was not born in America, 57% believe he is Muslim, and 24% said he may be the Anti-Christ.
Before Obama took office, congressional Republicans decided that they would oppose every single bill that Obama supported. They used the filibuster to prevent all legislation from being voted on, including bills that Republicans themselves had co-sponsored. When president Obama decided to embrace a lot of Republican ideas like Cap and Trade, the individual mandate for health insurance and the Dream Act, these Republican ideas suddenly were denounced as Socialism and received zero Republican votes.
Even normally routine matters that Congress usually deals with on a bi-partisan basis, like a transportation bill or raising the debt ceiling, were held up by Republicans who didn’t want anything to get done during Obama’s presidency. By nearly letting America default on its debts, Tea Party Republicans even managed to lower our country’s credit rating, and then blamed Obama for it.
You even blamed Obama for the worst recession in 80 years even though it began over a year before he took office.
You have totally immersed yourself in anti-Obama hate speech, you can’t even state the man’s name, calling him O-BUM-a. You just repeat whatever you hear from right wing hate sites without exercising independent thought: “Obama is a (pick one) socialist/Marxist/Muslim/Communist/Nazi/Fascist/Kenyan/Anti-colonialist” or “Obama is trampling the Constitution”, “Obama hates America”, “Obama wants to control our lives”, “Obama has declared war on religion”, etc. These are not facts or even fact-based opinions; they are examples of hate speech.
Back when Bush was president, his critics said things like “Bush allowed higher levels of arsenic and mercury in our drinking water”, “Bush violated the 4th Amendment by illegally authorizing warrantless wiretaps on American citizens”, “Bush used false information to start an unnecessary war”, “Bush started the two longest wars in our nation’s history, presided over two recessions, increasing poverty rates, a collapse of our financial system, and turned a huge budget surplus into a trillion dollar deficit”.
These criticisms of Bush resulted from things he actually said or did, not by what we thought about him personally. Every President of the United States has been loved by some people and hated by others and progressives certainly criticized Bush harshly. But that criticism was not out of a personal hatred of the man, it was about his policies and his actions as president. I don’t recall when anyone questioned his citizenship, claimed he hated the country, or suggested he sides with our enemies.
You actually accuse Obama of hating white people, of siding with the terrorists who attacked our country and wanting to euthanize the elderly, even though you have no facts or even a rational argument to support these claims.
You don’t seem to see the difference between hate-driven opinion and fact-based opinion.
You still worship at the altar of George W. Bush and refuse to acknowledge that he was anything less than God-like in his perfection, while attack Obama as “un-American” for doing some of the exact same things you praised President Bush for doing.
I’d hate to conclude that this is all based on race. Republicans hated Bill Clinton too, but we didn’t see quite this level of loathing toward him. Republicans did not filibuster every single bill to keep it from being voted on or actively work to halt the economic recovery like they have done with Obama. When Clinton was president, Republicans actually did reach compromises with him. When Obama pleads with Republicans to work out a compromise with him, they outright reject even the use of the word “compromise”.
Warning: Video has profanity
Your hatred of Obama is not an act of patriotism. Quite the opposite, by immersing yourself in all your right wing Obama-hating web sites you’re unable or unwilling to have any kind of meaningful political discussion. You are preventing this country from making any kind of positive progress by letting your personal hatred of this man allow anything positive to get done in this country. And you are doing your country great harm.
This is SO true! Well-said! And Bill Maher’s vid is spot-on!
Frankly those who worship at the Altar of Dubya should be singing Obama’s praises. Obama has continued every important imperial policy brought forth by the Bush Administration, and worse, he’s advanced them further than Bush ever dared, while glibly handling his “liberal” base with “feel-your-pain” language.
In other words, he’s like Bush, but smart and slick like Bush could never be, and thus is six times as dangerous to real progressive reform. Make no mistake: this is a man who is well-versed in the language of power. He is not to be trusted by reform-minded activists who wish to limit the power of corporations and the state.
I like this about Obama, though: he’s done two very good things, both unintentionally. First, by the mere color of his skin and the height of his office, he’s outed a lot of entrenched racists who had previously learned to blend in with the woodwork. Second, he’s outed the Establishment from what passes for the Left in this country: just look for those who stopped bitching about Bush’s tyrannical overreach when Obama took charge, and have been his apologists as he has expanded those powers.
Peter Anna, I think the point of the article was more about how this hatred towards this President has a different component, more of which racist undertones than his actual policies.
Excellent work, Jeff Excellent!
enjoyed reading the letter for a variety of reasons: balanced, non threatening, and thought provoking. I will add this thought, as well, and I simply don’t understand: if there is any person who belongs to the Tea Party, GOP or Conservative groups that do not adhear to the hate-mongering, xenophobic, homophobic, rhetoric these groups spew than why do they not stand up and tell their own party to stop the hissy fit and start actting like adults? Are these parties so lacking in leadership, courage and human decency that not one person in their coalition is able stand up and oppose this hateful rhetoric? They appear to be so wrapped around their version of the American Flag and bible that it’s cutting of air to their brains. I honestly don’t understand this behavior, and amazed that they don’t see this when they look in the mirror. If anything, their behavior has motivated me to become even more politically involved, for I feel as if I have to defend my personal rights from a group of terrorists from within our own borders.
Wish I was the Jeff who wrote this letter, He has stated everything I have in mind but lack the talent to put to words as He has done here
the anti Roosevelt people were pretty vitriolic too
Oh, I GOT what the article was about, TPP! It’s perfectly clear that there are some who have a completely irrational level of hatred for the President. Anyone who hasn’t been spending the last five years under a rock knows that!
I would caution, however, that there are also those who have completely irrational praise for the President, when they heaped scorn on Bush for his over-reaching. I would argue that these people are not interested in “fighting the power”: they’re interested in wielding power without being criticized. They believe that fluffy ideals and identity politics make them sacrosanct despite using the same methods as Bush to achieve the same imperial ends.
And I’m sorry, but not hating on gays and women doesn’t justify or excuse the continuance and expansion of state & corporate power via warrantless surveillance, massive expansion of drone wars, the erosion of civil liberties and the eradication of due process and the writ of habeas corpus, prosecution of whistleblowers, major giveaways to big pharma, big agro, big finance, big oil… do I have to continue laying out reasons?
Maybe not worthy of hatred, but certainly apprehension and mistrust, if not disgust. *sigh* Sure, OK, he’s not Romney, I’ll give you that. But he’s no less a sellout faux-liberal douchenozzle for not being a Randroid shit sandwich, alright? I don’t hate him, but I don’t like him, either, and there ain’t a damn thing you can do to make me trust him.
Peter Anna, does the article ask you to trust the President or even like him? It is an op-ed from a writer. You can agree or disagree. No one is trying to change your mind. We run many articles criticizing the President.
Every word you wrote is absolutely true.i have never in my lifetime seen such blatant disrespect for our commander in chief.Hanging dummys from trees with the President’s face on it,frequent use of the n word without repercussion.I feel things like this warrants jail time. The president has basically been screwed from the word go and I don’t think it’s because he’s muslim, anti christ or not born in the United States.i feel it’s because he’s black.(I’m white by the way so this is by no means a racist remark.)The fat cat, rich white men just cannot handle the fact that our President is black so they twist everything around and Republicans continue to block his every move and then have the nerve to point the finger at him. What a sad,sad day for the President and The United States.
Yes, Obama warrants jail time. For a supposedly Harvard educated Constitutional scholar, his utter disdain for the First, Second, Fourth and Tenth Amendments is treasonous. Your obsession with thinking that Obama’s opposition comes because he is black only highlights your own myopic racism. I would gladly have had Sen. Alan Keyes or Herman Cain (the ONLY candidate to even offer an economic plan) as President. Even Dr. Carson, who recently schooled Obama on the ignorance of Obamacare, would be a fantastic replacement for our drone flying, American citizen spying, lying, over-spending, whining about specific journalists, doesn’t know a fee from a tax MORON you elected and still support in spite of the fact that we have over a TRILLION dollars a year in deficit spending, ever increasing our national debt which nears $17 TRILLION (it was just about 10 trillion when your beloved Bush was in office). Make all the whiny excuses you want. Reality, truth and facts elude you and your ilk. The fact that un-vetted Obama is in the White House does make it a sad, sad day for the United States of America.
(thanks for the laugh – “I’m white by the way so this is by no means a racist remark). You are racist and you don’t even realize it! That is called “delusion”!
Based on your comment, I can only assume you have earned a Juris Doctorate in Law. Please enlighten the rest of us, including those of use with law degrees, about how Obama has allegedly trampled on the First, Second, Fourth and Tenth Amendments. If you copy and paste, I’ll know. Please be original and provide empirical evidence.
You’re the kind of people I’m talking about….IDIOT!
Jeff Thomas, thank you for proving the author’s point so perfectly. You state alleged facts which are easily proven untrue. The annual deficit has only gotten smaller every single year of Obama’s presidency and is well below a trillion dollars a year now.
You are only full of hate and vitreol with no element of fact or truth.in any of your comments. You repeat easily disproven right wing lies and have nothing but insults and hatred for the people you disagree with.
Thank you again for being such a perfect example of a right wing hate monger.
That may be. But what that means is that the *national debt* is still rising. The *yearly deficit* is down, but the national debt is still rising. This may not be a good thing, but Jeff Thomas fails to note how big the debt is with regard to the gross domestic product of the U.S.A. It also doesn’t violate the Constitution in any way, since a balanced-budget amendment hasn’t been passed. (Who is “Dr. Carson”, BTW?)
Of course, beyond this is the fact that (1) the national debt was well on its way to going down under Bill Clinton and President Al Gore TYVM until George W. Bush’s tax cuts for the rich and war of choice in Iraq. Recessions obviously bring tax revenues down, too, but Obama wasn’t allowed to restore the Clinton-era tax rates on the rich. So Jeff Thomas can eat it.
As a Progressive I see Obama as a complete disappointment. He’s a conservative Republican calling himself a Democrat. He’s a corporate tool with nothing but contempt for the left. Why an outfit calling themselves the Progressive Press would waste their time extolling the virtues of this charlatan is beyond me.
There’s a difference between a “disappointment” and someone outright “wrong”. EVERY President is going to be a disappointment. EVERY POLITICIAN is going to be a disappointment. Because WE WANT THE WORLD AND WE WANT IT NOW and if we don’t get THE WORLD NOW we’re disappointed. You were disappointed in the ACA, too, weren’t you? It’s a step forward, but you’re still disappointed.
Peter did any network go on camera with Bush and tell him “they hate you”? “Over reached …..” Two wars one for personal reasons. Cut taxes for rich folk. Outed CIA agent, non fund prescription bill, Halliburton loophole for Cheney, Katrina et al The very mention of Bush is a major false equivalence so your premise is flawed..
[...] An Open Letter to all People who Hate the President (progressivepress.net) [...]
Jeff, you’re doing exactly what you’re accusing us of,if you’re not being agreed with your down everyones throat.BARACK OBAMA IS PRESIDENT get the fk over it.
‘Bush is Stupid’, ‘Bush is a war criminal’, signs showing Bush looking like a monkey, photoshopped pictures making Bush look like an idiot…don’t pretend that liberal criticisms of Bush wasn’t personal.
Only after he lied us into wars and trampled on civilian liberties via the Patriot Act.
Indeed!!
Oh right, I almost forgot. Everything is ok when libs do it:: Crosshairs on maps, photoshopping the president’s picture into a chimp, T-shirts with Bush being hanged or shot, T-shirts with the “S” in “BUSH” replaced with a swastika, making friggin’ movies about his assassination, hacking his email and publishing private messages about the possible funeral of his father. Sure, it was all about policy. What a bunch of hypocritical touchbuckets this self-styled-yet-anonymous “writer”, and his supporting commenters, are.
Were we wrong?
What an ignorant, intolerant, hateful letter. You used this space to vent your hate and ASSumptions toward anyone who disagrees with the politics and policies of THE most inept President EVER. No mention of your hatred of and for Bush for 8 years. No mention that Obama has been an ABJECT FAILURE in leading this country for anyone but enriching those in Washington DC and Wall Street. I was impressed, however, with the introduction of HR 933 today, halting Obama from using tax dollars to golf until the White House was reopened for tours. I mean, the $277,000 the White House spends on calligraphy is SOOOOO essential to our nation! Or Obama’s $102,000 a year dog trainer! Those both serve America’s middle class so well!
It is no surprise that your rock-headed, right-wing rant is utterly, factually wrong. That “$102,000 dog trainer” lie was so easily disproven, but reich wingers like you can’t handle the truth. So pathetic.

You are right about the dog trainer! He does not pay the entire $102,000 per year! So, is $20k, $30k or $50k of tax dollars more acceptable for you, Sam?
Your whiny, impotent and blind support of the most inept President ever is HILARIOUS! Tell us, as I am sure you cried constantly about Bush, what has Obama CHANGED from Bush? I mean, if it was BAD when Bush did it, how did it magically become good when Obama does it?
Or, you can work on these:

Jeff Thomas, Here is an article that describes you perfectly.

Links to empirical evidence, champ. We’ll wait.
From Belgium lady 63 years old.
I agree totally with what you wrote, said.
Many européens are completelly chocked by the hatred some amercicans have against Barrack Obama, because he is metis, because he is humanist in hi philosophy that means he thinks about humpans , not about lobbys . And also wat schoks me;.is most hatred poeple In USA act like the islamist terrorits : meaning with such heatred with dreming to kill Obama and kill their onawn USA citizens who have no jobs, no social secutrity( there should be a Universal social security for each human being on earth )..when these religious poeple say they speak in the place of tjeir god, it is with criminal minds disrespect and like you say with no arguments, no real analyse of the reality ,of the real situation ,of what lobbys are doing since 50 years on earth, etc etc .. sorry for my poorly English, I write better in French. But Barcak Ob ama took poresidentie after Bush and others have destroyed your USA ….making you a slaves of China and to the lobbys, the banks ….( like our Européans also) also, being humanist, and a politician who wnats social security for eac and everyone is not being a communist, niether a socialist, it is being a mature responsible attentive loyal, respectfull lovable human man and politician….We know Barack Obama is not free to do his best because of teh lobbys and religion in USA….kind Regards to you , merci ebaucoup.FleurBelge
Hello FleurBelge! You apparently have no understanding or knowledge regarding Obama. Thanks for your opinion, but you had best stick to your Socialist whatever you are doing. Have a great day!
Mr. Thomas, look at the other comments on this page. Most people try to engage in meaningful discussion of the issues. You are just a troll, trying to spew easily verifiable lies and making petty insults. If you had any meaningful facts or even a logical point to make, you would have done so by now. There are some intelligent conservatives who comment on these articles from time to time. People who can challenge us and make us rethink our positions. Then there are trolls like you who only make us shake our heads and laugh.
Jeff Thomas-with the bald eagle & flag cliche’ photo you hide behind- you are the epitome of the “Ugly American” an embarassment. A 63 year old woman takes the time to share her thoughts from another country and because you don’t like her them, you insult her. FleurBelge- not all Americans are rude and disrespectful.
Regards to you- Stephanie
I spent several years as a youth in Hawaii, I met kids like Obama, you are kidding yourselves if you think he’s some kind of equal opportunity type. He was taught by his piers to hate haulies and to fit in. As far as his citizenship, I’m not concerned about where he was born Im concerned about the whoe Indonesian citizenship issue and why there is no record of repatriating and denying of his Indonesian citizenship. As far as being a Lawyer do people think once a lawyer always a lawyer? He dropped his license a long time ago. Do people realize that many of the issues regarding Bush’s wars and the issue with Libya have to do more with currency than with ideologies? I’m no genious but I do work in the heathcare industry and the regulations of the PPACA are extreme and really accomplish little as far as working toward health coverage for a working public. Another concern is the constant use of unfunded Executive Orders in order to work his will on the Federal Government. All well and good until somebody has to figure where the funds will come from. Still the major problem with our contract with the Federal Reserve to print money and maintain the title of the “King of the Commodities” is shakey, hopefully all Americans don’t end up paying the price for poor fiscal accoutability.
You’re right, Delmar. I have to agree. You’re “no genious.”
I am appalled by all these angry comments from educated people about our President. It seems like “Anger and Criticism” is propelling this country to Hell! Republicans rich or poor will always hate Obama because “He Is” black. They might swear up and down on their Mother’s grave that they don’t care what color he is, But they DO!!! Our President is a decent man,and he is proving that every day, by doing the best he can for the office he was elected for. And I love him for that and will stand by his word as long as he needs me. So Republicans, you lost so, SHUT THE **** UP ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!
I’m appalled as well. …it’s wrong, but what I find missing in your commentary is your are not appalled by the treatment Paul Ryan and house speaker Boehner get… just an observation…. Any democrats are just as contemptible is their commentary…

I am a republican and whole heartily agree that this personal hate / fear / racial driven intolerance is so wrong…. Debate the facts and if you don’t like a tax and spend socialist that’s fine but don’t go down this road like he is some horrible person because he is not. The other side of this is don’t cover for
his mistakes and wrong policy direction because he is in your party…if your black don’t just back everything he does because he is black… You see there are at least two sides to this… Bottom. Line is disagree with respect .. If you don’t think Obama is a good president that’s one thing but if away from the political differences you may have with him…don’t think he’s a good man, nice guy etc. then you have an entirely different issue.
amen, Corey. Thank you for disagreeing without the hate. I wish more conservatives were like you.
Obama is not a socialist. Insert Pat Moynihan here.
An Open Letter to all People who Hate the President http://t.co/2uiETe8Qg9 via @ProgressivePrs
This is so true. The Republicans would rather see real people who need help, not get it; our fighting men/women not get paid for the dangerous work they are doing in other countries; letting the rich continue to avoid taxes with loopholes at the expense of the very poor and middle class. I hope that all of these people coming up for election are voted out of office and I hope the people wake up and see them for what they are doing to our country.
You don’t know this man. You see a few parts of him, listen to his speech and cheer. Look at his past. He has none. His history is obscured. College transcripts are locked from public view. What do you think that could mean? The fact of the matter is, you have elected a leader who could be the man who destroys the country you live in through “globalization.” Are you willing to live a pauper’s life for globalization? Did your forefathers devote their lives so you could hand over the entire nation to the banks?
No, I don’t trust Obama. I think he is a misanthrope. I hope I am wrong. I am sorry. I know you love him. But the cost of a mistake like this is far to great to accept a person at his word. He is worth 25 million dollars now…was 250,000 when elected. Naivete is just one word used to describe Americans, fickle is another. You believe the banker-owned media after the bankers destroyed the economies of several first world nations…that my friends, is just stupid.
Wendy G, where should I begin? First of all, Obama’s past is a matter of public record as much as any other president. You can research everything about him yourself. His college transcripts are not “locked from public view”. You don’t seem all that alarmed that Mitt Romney, G. W. Bush, John McCain and most other Republican candidates for president have never released their college transcripts.
There is nothing Obama has said or done that suggests he is engaging in “globalization”, if you even understand what that means.
By the way, progressives don’t “love” Obama, they just consider him an improvement over most of the alternatives. They criticize him for being too conservative and too friendly to the big corporations.
But thanks for the entertaining comments. Your paranoid ramblings about Obama suggest you are exactly the kind of person that this article is written about.
What about all our left wing hating websites, and yes he has been asked to prove where he was born and yes he has to show proof, but remember he is the only president that there has been any questions about his citizenship that I know of so you have no beef about people wanting to know, and you want to make that people like are racist by wanting to know about things but why does everything you leftist don’t want to answer always you bring race into it, one more thing why was the socialist frank wright removed from Obama book in second printing, in first Obama talks about his mentor, then all of a sudden it was removed, please answer me, I know you will resort to your old standby and call me a racist because you don’t want people to know.
Robert, nobody will call you a racist for disagreeing with or criticizing the president. The article you commented on didn’t suggest anything like that.
Obama has provided more proof of is origin of birth than any president in history but some right wingers still claim he was born in Kenya without a shred of supporting evidence.
It is not the left that brings race into the discussion. It is invariably the right that does this.
I would like to see Obama treated exactly like any other president. Unfortunately, he is held to a much higher standard and even his wife is attacked and denigrated in ways I’ve never seen a president’s wife attacked in my lifetime.
[...] An Open Letter to all People who Hate the President [...]
From reading the letter then most of the comments post letter I think the hate is directed more at each other than the US president. No wonder the president ( whover it is at the time) has such a hard time doing his job.
You know, I might have listened more, if you hadn’t started off with the Glen Beck and Republicans are nuts routine. You want your audience to listen, you might not want to start off by insulting them.
First of all, when Obama ran, he didn’t share his Birth Certificate openly. It led to a lot of broughhaha. It is only a sign of his current “transparency” or should I say lack of it.
He has numerous reasons that I’ve seen that make him a bad President. His civil liberty violations, that not even Bush had deigned to do. His whinyness when getting critiqued. Going so hard core on the Business community causing them to be scared during a time of economic stress. His blatant disgust with anything that doesn’t agree with him, leading him to not be able to work with the Republicans, thereby leading us more polarized, despite running on the platform of being a joiner. Mind you Bush who had experience and tried, couldn’t do it either with the Democrats.
Maybe it has something to do with the inability of both sides to get their collective heads out of their asses. Your piece does not help matters. And trying to make Obama greater then he sounds, isn’t helping, when he obviously has many issues. Ignoring his issues and not standing with people, only lead to the lack of “transparency” and continued civil liberty violations.
Try being less of an elitist prick, when you want to get Republicans to listen. Try asking why, people have issues. Try not and assume that some of us listen and parrot Glen Beck(and mind you it’s no worse then some of you who parrot Ted Rall, at least Beck shows some understanding of his words.)
Bianca, you are exactly the type of person that this article describes. You repeat nonsense that has been repeated proven to be factually untrue. Your Birth Certificate comment perfectly demonstrates this.
Although, like I said, Obama deserves criticism like anyone else, you’re not satisfied to criticize for things he actually did. You contrive garbage out of thin air. Under President Obama, businesses have done spectacularly well. The Stock Market has doubled in value and corporate profits are setting records. Yeah he sure has been hard core on the business community.
It’s ironic that you think stating objective facts makes someone an elitist prick. Your comments were nothing more than childish insults and lies.
I just dislike him because he is such a poor leader. It has become painfully obvious to all but his most ardent supporters. He is making Jimmy Carter look good.
