Perpetual Volunteers: Teachers Should Not Be Expected To Work For Free

I saw a “job announcement” last week for someone to teach after-school classes. It touted the “opportunity” to plan lessons and run classes (and of course it would also include classroom management, material preparations, and parent relations). In all ways, it appeared to be a posting for a part-time teaching job. The kicker? The job was completely volunteer! I’m all for volunteerism, but when the volunteer “opportunity” looks EXACTLY like a highly-skilled day job, it starts to cross into insulting territory. For what other profession is this acceptable? “Looking to give a surgeon the opportunity to perform brain surgery several…

‘Let the Banks Fail’ Says Iceland President

Iceland is in economic recovery with lower unemployment rates than Europe, and its President says “let the banks go bankrupt”, speaking at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland (23-27 January, 2013.) In an impromptu interview with the Al Jazeera News Network’s Stephen Cole, Iceland’s President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson explains that his country was able to rebound from the worldwide financial crisis better than all other countries that faced the same problems, by doing just that, allowing the failing banks to go bankrupt. He says “we did not follow the traditional, prevailing orthodoxies. We introduced currency control. We let…

Berlusconi Praised Mussolini for “Having Done Good”

157848-italy-politics-berlusconi

Former Prime Minister of Italy, infamous Silvio Berlusconi has managed to get himself into hot water again with his outrageous statement, defending Benito Mussolini at a ceremony to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day. He said the fascist dictator made an alliance with the Nazis, because probably he feared Germany’s potential expansion, The Telegraph reports. He also praised Mussolini for “having done good” other than implementing the racial laws which he described as part of the requirements of the alliance with Germans. After the country’s disastrous experience in the war, new laws were enacted to forbid the defense of Fascism. Now,…

Moving the Land under Our Feet: Belo Monte Dam vs. Amazonians

Indigenous people of Xingu River are fighting a losing battle against a monster called Belo Monte. Construction of the world’s third largest dam is moving ahead despite the rejection and outcry of the people who have been living by the Xingu River for thousands of years. And despite the legal challenges the Brazilian Federal Public Prosecutors Office, human rights and environmentalist NGOs presented to the Brazilian Government. The project, originally dates back to Brazil’s military dictatorship, is being promoted as a solution to Brazil’s electricity shortages and as a ‘clean’ alternative to global change. However, the National Amazon Research Institute’s…

The Unborn: Sunday Semantics Showcase

justiceforunborn

If you are easily offended, you may want to skip this. In fact, you probably should. We here at The Progressive Press like to talk about Semantics. In fact, I’ve often addressed the importance of Semantics in our culture, politics and daily life. Words matter. And once a word (or phrase) is hammered into the stream of public discourse, it’s pretty hard to shake it. Words are imagery. And they have shaped – are shaping – some of the most important issues of our time. Pro-Choice v. Pro-Life, Entitlements v. Earned Benefits, Gun Control v. Public Safety, and so on….
